<<Too many people did not pay taxes on their market gains last year, thinking it would be better to reinvest and pay the penalty. Not a bad idea, until reality bites. IMO, a lot (not all) of what is happening now is tax cover selling.

That won't be the case going forward. Who had gains in 2000?>>

A lot of people had big gains in 2000, Pat. Not everyone rode their stocks down to the bottom (I'll claim a 50:50 on my holdings and wish I could make better use of my hindsight <ggg>). I don't think that a big chunk of the sales taking place right now are related to paying on 2000 gains where the taxes weren't reserved against but I do have a good friend who is a tax pro and he told me the same as OWN STOCKS posted; the number of people coming in who had big gains in 2000 and didn't set aside the taxes is many and a lot of them are now biting into their core to cover the tax bill.

FWIW.

Who had gains in 2000? If anyone did, this would be the time to take an extension.

You can get an extension to file, but tax must be paid on 4/15 or interest and penalties can begin to accrue
