Raja-spokesperson for the GSM Cabal.

The group that brings you 2.5 G concepts, GSPR and EDGE, that do nothing to enhance your existing GSM system. Oh well its only money. The next concept W-CDMA or UMTS is still in committee. The Cabal hope to have a final version out in 6-8 years. By that time through patent expiration or re-engineering the GSM Cabal will have figured away around Q's patents. Hey you operators can wait, its only money and remember its the Euro togetherness that counts.

Raj,

Please let us know when a W-CDMA system is deployed commercially without payment to QCOM. The European companies you reference are so far behind in the development of any form of 3G CDMA that it will be several years before they need a license. All equipment providers for NTT DoCoMo's W-CDMA launch this May will have QCOM license. I wonder why they bother?

Pete

or

c) E, N, S, A et al when crafting the ETSI standard, tried to systematically and intentionally work around Q´s patents, but were unsuccessful to the extent that they themselves have had to swallow their pride (except for the exceptionally stubborn/stupid) and license with the Q to avoid going belly up as soon as the 3G arrives

...since Q will receive similar income of WCDMA and CDMA2000, there is really no need to struggle for CMDA2000.

except for those small items like...

1) CDMA2000 is ready now, thus generating QCOM profits that much sooner, rather than letting the GSM cabal foist it's crappy GPRS/EDGE upgrade path to nowhere on an unsuspecting public for the indefinite future...
2) CDMA2000 actually works... in the real world... in a form factor that doesn't require a moving van to lug it around or a "concept" label and a breadboard inside...
3) CDMA2000 doesn't require the operator to pay a pound of flesh to the GSM cabal vultures for their worthless token IPR, making it cheaper... making the operators more profitable/successful, making the system grow that much faster...

Is this really the best FUD your handlers at E, N, S, A et al can come up with? So do they really make you sign the contract in blood when you sell you soul? Is the going rate still 30 pieces of silver?

I don't think he's speaking of QCOM royalties; rather, he's speaking of the all-in cost to those who implement the technology. Efficient use of spectrum, buildout costs, etc.

Rajala,

The game is not over, so please don't be sad. You have a few more months to work for Siemens and Alctel but then you have to move to China to
support the next big technology: TD-CDMA. Hope you like Cow Mein and Low Mein.
