Marxism, at its core, sought to end oppression imposed upon the masses (most people) by an indifferent wealthy elite and a religious hierarchy that was the puppet of these powers, so was by definition democratic - popular, of the people. If you had a clue about it, it was revolutionary in the same way that American's couldn't vote their way out of the English empire. Not evil, but misguided.
