Darleen, Subj: Drowning in Debt - (Tonight's Nightline)

Date: 3/14/01
From: listeditor@abcnews.go.com (Nightline)

If your mailbox is like mine, hardly a day goes by
when there aren't at least several solicitations
from credit card companies...

... it doesn't take much to get the plastic.

It's quite another to get untangled from the debt
you can easily accrue if you're not disciplined.

America is awash in debt.

Credit cards are a big part of that.

Americans charged a trillion dollars last year...

Congress is poised to pass legislation to make it tougher
for people to erase debts in bankruptcy court...

Whatever passes the Senate over the next few days
will be the most sweeping overhaul of bankruptcy laws
in 20 years. Critics say the legislation emerged
because of hard lobbying by the credit card companies
and banks, which donated millions of dollars
to members of Congress and contributed generously
to President Bush's campaign...

... balance transfers for a shiny new credit card.
