Remember the example: I know who the murderer is, but cannot prove it to the satisfaction of the court. Others may believe me, based on their assessment of my character, or the credibility of my narrative. But for purposes of the law, the case fails, and the murderer is acquitted.

Now, pointing out that I cannot prove my case legally will do nothing to cause me to doubt the identity of the murderer. My certainty is unassailable, even though I cannot guarantee that all will share it.

Anyway, we may not be certain of a lot of things, but we are certain (that is, do not entertain serious doubt) about many things too. I am sure that I am typing a post addressed to you at this moment. I am sure that I live in the state of Maryland. I am sure that Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria. Some of it is a matter of direct knowledge, some inference, some a matter of trust, and it is not out of the question that something I once thought reliable will be discovered to be false. But at this moment, the level of probability of various statements is so high, I experience no unease, no hesitation in assertion, no need to confirm, etc. Thus, I have no real doubt. Thus, I am certain.......
