Saw something interesting today: I took time out this afternoon to stop by a local well-known brokerage office in a well-to-do part of Glendale, Calif. I've done this many, many times over the past few years at different times and on different days of the week. Today was "different."

Every broker was with a client, the waiting chairs were full, customers were waiting in line (that alone was significant); none were smiling.

One woman was crying as a broker tried to console her with, "Everything is down, you're not alone." Another bypassed the brokers, went straight to the trading phone and was heard by everyone to say, "I don't care, sell everything...now." No one looked at her in surprise. All three customer terminals were in use with visibly nervous people waiting behind them to log on. Groans and profanity could be heard occasionally, but no outright screaming (thank God).

Maybe I was just there at the wrong time on the wrong day.

Or maybe Wall Street is really beginning to hit Main Street.

Signs of a final bottom or a prelude to hysteria next week or maybe nothing in particular...I wish I knew. Sure was spooky.

Regards,
Mark
