Please! To say that listening to polls, provides a consensus and leads to better decision making, is just difficult to take. One would expect a leader of any party to work with the best advisor available and to lead by making what was believed to be the best decision, regardless of the popularity of such a decision, as indicated by the polls.

Focus groups probably would have voted to continue slavery, segregated schools, and prevented women from ever voting.

Without underlying principles, focus groups can lead you in all kinds of directions.

"Leadership" sometimes means doing what is not popular.
