If anyone knows of some software to slow down a CDROM drive, I wouldn't mind knowing about it...

Answering my own question:

home.t-online.de

German dude Joern Fiebelkorn's proggy "CD Bremse" (CD brake) does the trick quite nicely.

Yes, that reminds me one of the things I've never understood. Do people really buy a CD rom player because it's 50x rather than another one 'coz it's 30x?

I have a 32x CD player and it makes an awful noise. I much prefer my slow, reliable, and QUIET 8x CD player. I'd never buy a fast one given the choice; I see 50x and just think "Ugh, imagine the noise that makes."

Scary thing is I've started thinking the same way about CPUs. I don't want a GHz CPU if it needs a stonking great noisy fan on it. Give me my silent 350 MHz K6-II anyday - it's a dream and I love it.

Neil.
