Why not? The only alternative is SpeedStep. And if I understand correctly, SpeedStep's 'battery optimized' mode is identical to PowerNow's 'low power' mode -- essentially just reduced voltage for slower processor speed. [If this is wrong, I'm sure someone will let me know!]

If you bought a computer with PowerNow capability, and PowerNow's auto mode wasn't to your liking, it would just mean you'd be left with, uh, sPeedsTep.
