Kevin - We're having rolling blackouts in San Diego today, too. I agree with your assessment of the situation, but I think there is some "manipulation" going on, too. We keep hearing about power plants that are off-line for "routine maintenance". Somehow, that doesn't sound right to me. Didn't they see this coming a year ago and couldn't they have planned a little better?

I'm getting ready to shut the computer down before the peak power usage time arrives.

Betty

Kevin T: Your take on the California energy crisis is right on the money, particularly the role your bonehead governor has played in this. Grey Davis is solely responsible for this morass, by: (1) artificially capping what consumers pay for energy and eliminating any impetus to conserve.; (2) by shielding California consumers from energy rate hikes that the rest of the USA is experiencing, he has eliminated any consumer outcry or response to the overly restrictive "conservationists", who discourage any of the independent power producers from building sorely needed energy plants; (3) by not reimbursing the California utilities for the power they have to purchase on the "spot" energy market, bankrupting them.

Be certain of this: there will be tremendous opposition to having the government bail California out of this mess. To his credit, Pres. Bush is also not inclined to intervene. Only by giving Californians a series of never-ending rolling blackouts, and watching businesses move out of California, will the people force Grey Davis to take the tough actions he should have taken years ago.
