About when QCOM's patents expire.

You are correct, Mike, for the European block which has a vested interest in delaying 3G until then, 2007 if I am remembering correctly, for the most basic essential patents without position location technology and without the many other enhancements added since then such as zero intermediate frequency (which greatly reduces asic production costs).

But the U.S., Japan, Korea, Australia, China and every other country without a vested interest (royalties) in 2G GSM has no reason to stall the technology which will place their citizens on the wireless data cutting edge and reap rewards accordingly. The European block, on the other hand, has already likely decided to move from the world's wireless leaders to the laggards in order to extract every nickel possible from their GSM IPR.

My guess is that you are right and they will continue to milk 2G wireless as MOT milked 1G wireless. And five years from now they will end up with the same result as MOT has.

It's a great poker game and fun to follow.

Best, Rory
