Cognitive dissonance is always possible. I suppose one can believe that universe is pretty hostile, or indifferent to human concerns, and think that life is worth living because there are pleasures afforded. But it sounds like solace in an otherwise hopeless situation.......

"Perhaps what really scares you is the possibility that people who operate outside the bounds of faith, as you concieve it, and seem perfectly happy, have a great deal more nerve than you do?"

Convince me that within the bounds of temporality, life is just and fair. It is definitely true that one human being can screw another and reap some materialistic rewards in this life. So, I don't doubt that people who choose to "go for it" can find plenty of pleasure to be "happy" about in the short term. It takes faith to believe that you have a real opportunity to be "perfectly happy."
