But there were at least some 760MPs available in that timeframe. They were demoing a dual processor system around the time of Microprocessor Forum last year. JC's linked to an article about it on 10/10, unfortunately the link is dead.

So the OEMs should have been able to evaluate 760MP systems before the Mustang was cancelled. They should have had empirical information at the time they expressed dis-interest. So why the interest now? And seemingly abruptly too.
