Alcatel Sees World DSL Market Up As Much as 45% a Year By 2004

Dow Jones Online News, 03/23/2001 08:09

HANNOVER, Germany -- Company officials at France's Alcatel SA said they expect the world digital subscriber line, or DSL, market to show 40% to 45% annualized growth over the next three years.

DSL technology enables high-speed Internet access across traditional twisted-copper-pair telephone cables, among other things. Alcatel (ALA) is one of the largest telecommunications operators in the world.

Chief Technology Officer Martin de Prycker said Friday that Alcatel is targeting a 50% market share in the fast-growing market in China.

Speaking at a press conference during the CeBIT technology fair here, Mr. de Prycker said Alcatel (ALA) has 49% of the DSL market in North America, 52% in Europe, and 28.8% in the rest of the world.

"We are confident of maintaining our market share," he said.

Meanwhile, Mr. de Prycker declined to comment on speculation that Alcatel may be interested in making a bid for Bookham Technology PLC.

On Thursday, Alcatel signed a long-term agreement with China Telecommunications Corp. to supply China's dominant telephone operator with more than 50% of the equipment it needs to deploy high-speed Internet access.

Based on market research and prevailing market prices, the multiyear deal could be valued at between $70 million and $225 million in the first year, with most of the business to follow in later years.

Is it just me Zbyslaw, or does it seem that ALA has good news every few days. It feels like it's been business as usual at ALA, not a hint of a slowdown with this company that I have seen. I wonder why investors don't see this.

FWIW, I'm starting to see ALA commercials all over the place. Saw one on FOX this morning.

Another Alcatel report from CeBit today.....

Hanover, Germany, March 23 (Bloomberg) -- Alcatel SA, Europe's fourth-biggest phone-equipment maker, said it expects the market for some of the high-speed Internet equipment it sells to expand by 40 percent to 45 percent a year through 2004.

The Paris-based company, which controls about half of the global market for so-called digital subscriber line equipment, yesterday said it won a ``major'' such order from China Telecommunications Corp. DSL gives people high-speed Internet access through their traditional copper telephone wires.

``I'm quite confident we'll keep up our market share, but obviously we'll have to fight hard,'' Martin de Prycker, chief technology officer at Alcatel, said at a press conference at the Cebit trade fair in Hanover, Germany.

The company in January said it plans to sell between 10 million and 12 million DSL lines this year, compared with 6 million lines last year. Alcatel is depending on rising demand at its networking and optical units to help offset a drop in sales of cellular phones this quarter.

Alcatel's shares rose as much as 2.97 euros, or 8 percent, to 39.97, in line with a 6.8 percent increase in the Bloomberg Telecommunications Equipment Index. The stock has declined 34 percent this year.
