ALA and China Telecom:
alcatel.com

Incidentally, I'm hearing similar comments on DSL growth from Siemens. Europe has an entirely different mind-set from the US as well as an embedded ISDN structure that's conducive to DSL deployment. What begins in 2001 will be dwarfed by 2002.

Alcatel jumps into the Next Generation Network at the Access
Layer

As industry first, Alcatel Litespan-1540 Multiservice Access Node fully integrates an
embedded IP server card.

Hanover, Germany, March 23, 2001 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA)
launches VoIP (voice over IP) and access gateway capabilities in its multiservice
access node Litespan-1540, integrating the Next Generation Network in its multiservice
concept.

The new IP capabilities are implemented in a new server card that can be plugged in
Litespan-1540 Multiservice Line Shelf on a universal slot alongside NB and BB line
cards, together with the transport and controller cards. This seemingly "simple" card
embodies the capabilities of an IP server embedded in the access node, optimizing the
use of bandwidth and bringing voice packets closer to the subscriber.

This VoIP server card is fully compatible with the already installed base, and can
transform at any time an already operational Litespan DLC into an Access Gateway,
thus allowing fast and cost effective migration of traditional networks to NGN.

Voice services are simultaneously conveyed and can be groomed to either the PSTN
(with V5.2) or to the IP network (with H248) thereby providing the operator the solution
most adapted to his network. For the business/high residential customers VoDSL
bundled services (voice & data) are also provided.

Alcatel Litespan-1540 is the platform able to provide a truly multiservice offer (voice,
data, ADSL) for both the residential and business market. Voice-over-TDM with open
V5.2 interfaces, Voice-over-DSL, Voice-over-IP ensure an easy response to evolving
customer needs. Its powerful network management capabilities make it an easy to use
cost-effective solution.

The operator can smoothly migrate from today's TDM networks with this future safe
Litespan to packet networks on a subscriber per subscriber basis and decide on the
migration speed in line with the market requirements.

Alcatel will soon offer a fully end-to-end integrated class 5 Next Generation Network
application with the Litespan 1540 Access Gateway and the Alcatel 1000 Softswitch,
using the standard signaling protocol H.248 (MEGACO).

Alcatel Litespan is leading the access market with 25 million lines installed worldwide.
