A few days ago I asked an electricity expert what would happen if a major power plant (such as San Onofre #3) tripped offline while the state was close to their maximum capacity, sending supply a mere 1.5% lower than demand. This is not an unrealistic scenario for this summer, given how many stage 3's the state has already had. Got a response overnight:

"The whole California grid will then come down and it will take a few days to restore power to the whole state....If you live in California, keep some flash lights around and a good shotgun to guard your property...."
