The WWF just bought WCW from Time-Warner. The ramifications are Earth-shattering: 1. All first tier rasslin' will now be on TNN, the hillbilly cable channel. To be fair, TNN now offers The Rockford Files and Miami Vice and Martial Law, so they have diversified from nasal twanging and reruns of The Waltons. 2. There will no longer be an "across the street" from the WWF. Wrestlers have inflated their salaries by playing off WCW and WWF. "Hey, Vince, Ted Turner is stupid enough to pay me $2 million a year." "Hey, Ted, Vince will give me $3 million and all I have to do is stick my arm down a stopped up toilet or fondle my crotch in front of young children." It is very unlikely that this will lead to a better product, but it will lead to lower salaries. If you are making seven figures from Vince, your only alternative is to fly to Japan. It is not like $50 a night from ECW is going to feed the bulldog. 3. Some folks have burned bridges. Hulk Hogan testified against Vince in his steroid pushing trial. Hitman Bret Hart punched out Vince as he left WWF. Others sued Vince for a variety of sins. Guess who is going to lose all their matches. The question is, will Vince totally destroy the heat of every WCW star to make it look like the WWF was always the major league? Or will he allow them to win a few matches and keep the heat in place. It is a fight between short term ego gratification and long term bucks. If you destroy a Goldberg or a Sting, who are major draws, they lose but so does the WWF. And somebody has to pay for the XFL bleeding red ink. 4. The common sense of a class act like Ric Flair can now be evaluated. Ric left WCW, became WWF champ, and returned to WCW without ruffling any feathers. When he rejoined WCW, fans at live events of the WWF would scream, "we want Flair!" One time I heard Vince say, "me, too, but he's gone." I would hope that Vince won't job out Flair, but you never know. My guess is that Ric will become some sort of part time wrestler, manager, back office type for Vince. Nobody works a mike like Ric. 5. Will Vince recognize the underutilzed potential of WCW's new breed. There are some guys who could be superstars if they are handled right. I hope he doesn't just dump them all. Well, folks, it came late, but this is the REAL Y2K discombubulation we've been waiting for. <g>
