Six years ago this spring we had two full time geophysicists working for us. They could not agree on a particular target, one said above basement the other said in the basement. The arguing went on and on and on and they almost came to punches. One was Irish and the other Scottish and they were both well qualified in their field.

The target in question was very small and not a priority target but because basement was only max 200 metres and we were in the general area anyway we decided to drill it on a lark with a truck mounted reverse circulation rig.

At about 50 metres depth an eyewitness said it looked like some force tried to pull the rig down the hole it then stabilized and blew the rig off the hole into the trees. It was a miracle no one was killed and the driller was fully insured. They hit a high pressure water aquifer before "above basement" or "in the basement" could be proven. Four days later by relieving pressure with another hole and tonnes of cement we shut off the faucet.

We were planning on firing one of the geophysicists and were using this as a sort of test. I used this opportunity to let both go. We have gone from one success to another without one "gee-whizz"icist on board. I'm only telling you this story because it is funny, not to offend you.
