Folio investing puts buyer in driver's seat
By Melissa Preddy, The Detroit News

It's not a bad deal, experts say, but there are caveats for consumers.

Well, that's basically what you're doing with a folio. The firms typically are registered broker-dealers (or trade through one) and are regulated by the National Association of Securities Dealers, just like the E(asterisk)Trades and Charles Schwabs of the investing world. Subscribers can create taxable accounts, tax-deferred retirement accounts like IRAs or both.

The catch: These "window" trades are executed twice daily, at 10:15 a.m. and 2:45 p.m., providing less control over price.

So I guess Limit orders are out of the question?

"It's really not inexpensive if you've only got $10,000 or so," he said. "At $300 a year you're paying 3 percent, and that's steep. At $100,000 you're down to 0.295 percent, and now you're getting down into the index fund range."

"But this is an advanced product -- it's not Investing 101, and it's not for novices," Ferri said. "It's for students of the market. And eventually, most are going to tire of managing it.

Hi Keith,
Very interesting post. I am not running my own folio at this time. I had decide to do that with Biotech, but then changed my mind and went with IBB for my biotech exposure. If ones, portfolio is big enough and traded often enough to make the annual fee less than commissions (with Datek $9.99 that means 30 trades a year) it may be a good deal. My only other concern is if they are holding your shares, what assurance do you have that you will get your money back?

What do you think?
