I don't know, I thought I read somewhere that the US gov't spends more on farm subsidies than revenues or profits derived from the farming, or something like that. I think it would require a severe supply side shortage. I only care about one commodity anyway, starts with a G -g-

Could the $ value reverse and people could again make money from commodities production? Might that make a difference in small town USA?

The problem is not the $, but the fact that the productivity of agriculture has grown by 3.5% per year for more than a century. No unsubsidized farm not of sufficient scale and level of investment can hope to compete in a commodity market. Specialty products would be possible, however.
