If they grow up on Linux, the switch to Solaris is pretty easy. Sun has the $1K+/- box now for people who want it. I.E., they have an "end-to-end" solution if that's what the market wants. Or you can use those cheap PC's as browsers/gateways to Sun servers.

You're phrasing the problem ("mainstream clients") in such a way that nothing short of an entry into the Wintel PC market will satisfy your alleged requirement. That's a logical fallacy. Sun has chosen to maintain its focus on non-PC's, and it has worked pretty well for them.
