Michael,
You don't have to believe the teacher's union's spin to fear than vouchers will remove support from public schools. The fear is perfectly rational. If you provide vouchers that will pay half or two-thirds of a private school education, who will stay in public schools and who will leave?

Isn't rational to believe that those with enough money to make up the difference and those who care very deeply about education will leave? Leaving behind the children of the very poor and those who do not care very much about education, and those children who are difficult and expensive to educate.

In short, all parents with any political clout whatsoever will be out of the system, and the public schools will be left with needier students and less political support to educate them.

If this situation develops, will the Republicans be out front and center to ensure that handicapped students have options too? History makes me doubt it.
