Kevin liberal and conservatives are purely labels. In the 60's I spoke on college campuses as a left wing radical. Today I really dont think any different than I did then but now I am a conservative. Go figure.

"However, the truth is that there are cultural influences that hold students with various ethnic backgrounds. Not all students, but to hold back ANY because 'education is not for us' is, well, somewhat suicidal, isn't it?"

When you are white and 12 and you don't do very well in school you understand your limitations and start thinking that hey I had better learn a trade. Today if you are black and not so swift you think I am a victim and start preparing to get a PHD.

Many blacks are passed through the educational system then get jobs through affirmative action then later on sue when they don't advance.
This cannot continue. With the huge influx of Hispanics into the country we will see the liberals turn their backs on the blacks and cater more and more to the Hispanics. Its just a mess. We need to get back to qualifications counting.
If not then we are heading to a cultural and racial meltdown.

I believe it is parents' and schools' responsibility to hold children back until they can perform well enough to succeed at the next level. That is not happening today, and it's a huge problem. I like what George Bush says, something like, "Let no child suffer the discrimination of low expectations."
<<Aren't parents who hold their children back condemning them to more menial, lower paying jobs?>>
