Joe,

AMD forms chip technology alliance with IBM

Ooops. Every company who has ever allied with IBM on chip technology has regretted it later, because of IBM's fundamental belief in screwing their partners. I would have much rather seen Rambus in that headline instead of AMD.

Re: AMD forms chip technology alliance with IBM

Joe, thank you for the information!

I am not sure what to make out of it. Is it good news because AMD allies with the undisputed leader in the SOI process? AMD has done several very successful license deals recently (EV6 bus, Motorola copper process). This one may be another thoughtful business decision leading to another success story.

Or is it bad news indicating that the Motorola SOI process doesn't work and that AMD has already lost a lot of time and money experimenting with a non-functional process? Is it just a sign of desperation because the original goals cannot be reached any more?

Any comments?

Peter

Re: "AMD said it has contracted IBM for chip design services "

Chip design services for the Hamsters?

Shouldn't the design of these be FINISHED by now if AMD is going to sample them by the end of this year?

My take - AMD has now slipped another 3 months in their schedule - and adding more designers to a late project will make it even later (cf Fred Brooks - The Mythical Man Month - IBM !)
