Primitive does not translate to bad. One of the best things about K7 was that they avoided "creeping elegance", and stuck to the fundamentals.

Compare K7 integer performance vs. PIII and P4. Do you really think they have a branch prediction problem?

But the question is whether or not improved branch prediction is worth it. The transistors required might yield a better IPC increase used somewhere else.
