Crystal Reports used to be owned by Seagate. Note that Seagate used to be number 6, and have a 5% market share but they are quickly sliding off the charts:

The made a decision a couple years ago to give away free 50 seat licenses. They apparently still do that but it doesn't seem to have helped them.

Crystal Decisions is a subsidiary of Seagate Technologies the hard drive manufacturer. Seagate was taken private last year.

Over the last 5 or so years Seagate bought a number of software companies and merged them to form Crystal Decisions. Their products are for reporting and querying. Much like COGN, BOBJ and BRIO. They are not considered quite as powerful as the market leaders but are mature products at a lower price point.

I am not aware of Ballistic Systems. If they do have an OLAP database that would make sense. I believe most people refer to an OLAP 'tool' as a BI tool. OLAP generally refers to the type of database used.

Perhaps you could provide some links on Ballistic Systems?

Thanks your response. I was getting lonely here. Please bookmark this thread as well; it covers many BI tools companies:
