Yes, the Phoenicians were a cagey lot. But it makes some sense, frankly, to be concerned that the vastness of the ocean is too much. Have you been to Jamestown or Plymouth? The ships that brought the early settlers to the Americas were pathetically small, and lucky to survive a good North Atlantic storm. Even the courageous Vikings hopped to New Foundland, from Ireland to Iceland to Greenland and down.....
