If this transition happened... I think Apple would recompile OS X for x86-64 and then provide an emulator to facilitate the transition of old PowerPC code until it can be recompiled/modified for x86-64. There have been a lot of rumors but few hard facts about the ongoing status of Apple's ability to provide OS X on x86 processors. Going to x86-64 could be a very interesting move. However, Apple derives most of its revenues from hardware and enjoys controlling both HW & SW which makes it a little easier to avoid incompatibilities but provides far fewer choices for consumers at higher prices.

This was how Apple made the transition from the 68000 series to the PowerPC processors. Was this what you meant?
