Cyrix was in deep doodoo and had a crummy design.

Nonsense. M1 was a very good design, and in fact was the fastest x86 processor on most integer benchmarks. In 1996 they broke into Compaq with MediaGX and changed the x86 world forever.

Cyrix failed for several reasons:

1. IBM screwed them.
2. Intel threatened OEMs against using Cyrix processors.

and later:

3. Cyrix failed to make MHz improvements in MII.
4. M3 was a complete screwup.
5. MXi was based on MII.
6. The Cyrix FPU stunk.
