Kevin:

"If you are so concerned about national security, then join the Guard or one of the branches of the armed forces"

I think you are missing or ignoring the point. The pro gun folks are saying and there is validation of this in the Federlist Papers that what was intended was that every able bodied male over a certain age (which some claim was the meaning of militia at the time the constitution was enacted) would have a gun in part to protect us from a tyrannical government.

Do you think it possible or impossible that a Hitler could arise in our country? I for one am a great believer that it could happen if the economy became bad enough, but I can respect the point of view of others who think otherwise. After all we are just speculating. I am not so uncomfortable with the gun lobby although I think some of their resistance to the more sensible laws. Requiring background checks before delivering guns purchased at gun shows makes a lot of sense. If there were a convenient way of integrating a trigger lock system in a gun, I also think that would be useful. Of course a lot of the laws that are proposed are the work of simple minds.

You continue to miss the point... the second amendment is meant to ensure that free individuals have recourse against the tyranny of the state. It's called the 'Revolutionary War', remember?... the vigilance of which Jefferson and the others spoke and wrote must be exercised primarily towards our own government, only secondarily towards other nations. Your comments regarding 'citizen armies' putting down 'revolts' are exactly 180 degrees out of sync. The second amendment is focused on enabling the Nat Turners of the world, as well as the George Washingtons and Patrick Henrys.

Have spent half my life in the armed services... understand and appreciate the importance of national security, and the necessity of sacrifice to preserve the nation we love. But I also understand, as did those who first sacrificed to give birth to that nation, the primal importance of individual liberty and responsibility... and the relationship between freely possessing the means to defend that individual liberty and liberty itself.
