Randy, re: Do you think it's naive to believe that the PC industry could devise a PC case which will serve the motherboards and other PC hardware over the course of multiple generations of motherboards/CPUs? What's in it for Dell, IBM, Compaq, Gateway... John

Maybe consumer demand could be spurred by finding an alternative "need" to use an old machine for an activity (so it doesn't feel like that old machine would go to waste when a new machine is bought, a possible purchase barrier). (Remember how color printers became popular because of kids? Not because of the parents. Some people even bought two printers. So, an idea similar to yours played out in the consumer color printer market.) In the enterprise market, a lot of old machines are used as gateways, backups, or a certain kind of servers, or moved to less cpu-intensive departments. RE: "If I could upgrade my P166 (spare machine running Linux) without replacing the case, I'd be much more likely to own my first P4 within six months. Instead, it will be when my PIII-500 slows unbearably." As far as replacements go though, I tend to feel the case (peripherals) need to match the CPU - i.e. what good is a fast CPU if the HD is so slow it'll restrict the speed of the machine.
