Second, there is a synergy on the Left, where it is presumed that on most things, environmentalists, feminists, gay rights activists, unionists, and so forth walk hand in hand, and all contribute to the election of "progressive" candidates

Excuse me, do we live on the same planet? or does your definition of "Left" encompass the entire center, including the entire Democratic Party? I see no particular "synergy" of environmentalists, feminists, and gay rights activists, and I would be surprised if the money they raised equalled one tenth of the money funneled to the oil and petrochemical lobbies.

That most lobbying takes place on the Hill, where all congressmen now have to practically hang "For Sale" signs on themselves if they want to be reelected, does not comfort me.

Every cause has the ability to publicize itself -- if it has backers, money and a forum. If money and a forum is lacking, backers won't be enough. Our "free press" is notably disinterested in discussing public service issues, or for that matter, in raising any subject that might be offensive to the large media conglomerates that own them.

One final question: if the First Amendment requires that no limit be placed on the ability of money to buy political speech (advertising) and political access and influence, wouldn't it be consistent to repeal the laws against bribery and allow legislators to sell their votes directly? What difference is left?
