My recollection of Newt was a little different. It was him who shut the government down in a fit of childish rage at being ignored. It was him who mobilized the right with talk of no compromise, no fraternization with the 'enemy' (Democrats). It was Newt that people were referring to when they labeled the GOP 'Get Old People'.

I said that when Bush got elected, let's give him a chance. I'm trying to be patient; the tax bill is a big test, to me. If he can show an ability for Congress to compromise for the good of the country, I'd give him a big plus. If he doesn't do anything to stop our slide into economic depression, I'd give him the heave ho. The economy is too important to screw up now.

To quote, "It's the economy, stupid". No disrespect intended :)
