I was just referencing Mars claim that "all"
the major Christian doctrines are a direct rip off from Buddhism.

Sorry. Missed the connection. I've gotten in the habit of skipping over posts than run more than about four paragraphs. Usually that only cuts out our Favorite Bloviator, Solon, <g> but this time I missed Mars as well.

I am not an expert on Buddha....

did you read the story of the Buddha's disciple
"walking on the water" , I just posted here?

Message 15583165

...and if so , would you like to comment on how exactly
similar it is to the story in the Gospels ?

I am not saying Christianity is ripped off
from Buddhism , Gregg . But there are many direct
similarities, references , and common themes.

I am very vigilant of ignorant fundamentalism
that condemns other belief systems as
"being the work of satan"

and promotes so much uneccesary fears, suspicions,
and strife in a world that all men share ,
hopefully someday with dignity and
enlightenment ...without the condemnation
behind their closed doors.

I can show you link after link on the internet of such Christian fundamentalism , making such claims ...that Hindus and Buddhists are devil
worshippers and "cults", when they
completely share almost every
spiritual refinement and goal
as does Christianity.

Did Christianity become infused with the teachings
of Buddha ? Well it was the fastest spreading teachings in the world then , and in India there was the story of the Messiah called "Krishna" 1500 years before. It is chronicled in one of the world's most well known Holy writings, embraced by many
of the geniouses
of our time.

You don't usually hear of Buddhists or Hindu's calling Christians "devil" worshippers.

the similarities of Buddha , Krishna , and "The Christ"
can be surveyed here in a post supplied from
Solon earlier:

It becomes harder and harder to deny the tie~in.
Time for Christians to acknowledge the
truth perhaps and step down off the
"high-horse"?

That being said, show me a reference to a document. Lets hold it up to the same level of scrutiny that the New testament documents are subjected to and we'll see if it holds any water,

Message 15583165

Greg , this story easily predates Christianity
by at least several centuries at best. The
record keeping in that part of the world
was excellent and rivaled it's counter-part
in Greco Persian worlds.

They have one of the oldest recorded histories of
man's civilization and by the time of Lord Buddha's
lifespan were one of the most highly
developed and skilled
cultures .

The original religious " scriptures " from Hinduism
are the far and away the oldest recorded on the planet,
dating back easily to 3500 years and beyond.
They are called the Vedas.

More is known of the life of the Buddha than any other
religious teacher/master/savior of
the ancient world .

The recording of the "Savior" Krishna , Gregg
is extremely well documented , I can assure you
dating back far, far before the vague and cloudy
origins of the Gospels
of Christianity.

Even the word "Scripture" , comes directly the Hindi word "Sruti".
...and Buddhism survives very well,
2500 years later.

Must be a truth there somewhere ...

regards

Mars

I thought your musings about gay republicans was as close an analogy to the "Who is a Christian"
question as I have heard

Glad I could add a little bit to your day. Feel free to borrow it if you ever need an analogy. Attribution not required. <g>

I am not an expert on Buddha.

I did a little homework and found a history of Buddha that is pretty readable.

india.coolatlanta.com

Here's an exerpt:

<<But though he received an impressive
following Buddha never claimed Divine status. Very few miracles are attributed to him.

"Miracles" by the Buddha

On one occasion a grieving lady carried her dead child to Buddha and asked him to revive it.
This was a perfect setting for a miracle to be woven into religious folklore, but Buddhist
records state that Buddha calmed the lady and told her that he would require three mustard
seeds to revive her child. But the mustard seeds should be from a family where so far no one
has ever died. To fulfill this seemingly simple request the lady went from house to house only
to be told that sometime or the other, someone had died in every family. Gradually, the truth
dawned upon the grieving lady and going to a cemetery, she laid down her child's body and
taking its little hand in hers, she said "Beloved son, I thought that death has overtaken you
alone. but no it overtakes all of us". She went back to Buddha and became his disciple. >>
