get their voice mail via their email, get email on their phone, and can send voice mail via email to another co-worker.

I'm very keen to understand this technology "beneath the covers". Specifically, I'd like to know how "voice to text" works in terms of the transcription technology. Any publicly accessible URLs etc would be most appreciated.

cheers, kumar

That was a tremendously informative post, speedie, and I hope to hear more from you in the future.

But if I may--and you're obviously more well-informed here than I--it seems that IP telephony is just a form of enterprise networking, no? I mean, their success in getting enterprises to standardize on their IP telephone systems doesn't speak to their ability to get telecom firms to standardize on their stuff, does it?

So insofar as IP telephony for enterprises is part of CSCO's natural market, extending their Gorilla power into it shouldn't be too tough. But I'm not yet convinced that they'll have a real leg up when it comes to selling to telecoms, which seem to be outside of CSCO's natural market.

Part of the problem is my relative ignorance when it comes to the "telecom" market. I mean, I've heard that it's huge, but I'm not sure what exactly it is that these firms will be buying (or even who exactly these firms are).

Welcome, speedskier. Comments on a sector coming from a practicing professional are highly valued, and I hope you hang around to give us more insights into networking. Lots of folks lace their first post here with biographical info, but as far as I'm concerned, your lead in sentence provided the essential reference.

I would respectfully take issue with that statement.

You posts indicate you are ltb&h and have interest in what we call Gorillas and Kings around here. Have you read the Gorilla Game?

speedskier: To paraphrase the opening line in Moby Dick, "call me Cha2" <G>. Kidding of course.

Much appreciate your opening as did Uncle Frank.

Any respect implied or otherwise is greatfully received.

But I was not clear. Used shorthand.

What I was referring to was fiber. And the message is data or all varieties.

To me data is the future, and that is where Cisco has stumbled in trying to compete - specifically in fiberglass.

And I fully recognize Cisco's strengths, they are awesome.

And perhaps Cisco will yet become a power in fiber, my only small point was that it is not a gorilla there.

(Actually, no one is !)

Best.
