Hate to see your method of "fixing" was to give the dualiedealie the heave ho....
but
I do understand, all too well, the upset and frustration with the non functioning unit ...

now that it is "gone to the chip dungeon", you'll probably never find the true problem ....

I suspected from the first that incompatitally of the parts .. software, hardware, usage ... was the flaw ...

MS does have more than a few bugs ... but heavens knows there is room for a LOT with what it does ...
and I'll wager that when XP comes out that you can load it and have it run fine on the discarded unit ...

I've used AMD, Intel, Cryix, and a couple more kinds of CPUchips in my day ....
and I've never found a lick of dif between them ... for my purposes ....
and, as you know my first box was a TRS running MSDOS from Radio Shack ....

Knowing some of the problems you've had, I think the problem did lie in the non acceptance of something you were having the box do that it didn't know how to do correctly ....and that means it was/is/willbe next to impossible to locate ...

think of it this way *(NOT that it helps in your situation) ...
out of the entire sales of
Dell, Intel, and Msft there is perhaps NOT another SINGLE box attempting to do what you were doing ..
so ..
the techies are stiymed (sp) ...

hey .... ol cutting edge O'Slev has to pay the price for being out in front ....

glad the AMDs are doing so well ...

and I've got to clean up this office here this weekend for I have computer parts and "hulls" strown around and about ...
I keep MORE than a few parts lying in my way ..... Hank and I have that in common ....

keep safe

BTW ...
I LOVE my old F150
