No legislative proposal that's been passed or is under discussion does more than nibble at the edges of the problem. It won't begin to shift until access to basic health care is available to all citizens, rich and poor, healthy and sick.


Nadine, I think the reason the discussion nibbles at the edges is because no one wants to have the real discussion--which is about what entitlement, if any, citizens have to health care. I think there's a consensus that health care should be available but I don't think there's a consensus that it should necessarily be provided for those who, one way or another, cannot pay.

Tailor remedies to the problem. If we are trying to ensure that those who fall between cracks have adequate access to health care, that is not a rationale for the overhaul of the whole system. The fault was in the bid for control. Besides, it is precisely when the weight of the government and its ability to generate publicity and support are thrown behind such a scheme that $250 million is a reasonable amount to defend ones interests......
