I agree, Charles. As I said before last quarter's earnings announcement, Microsoft has engineered a lot of "flexibility" into their accounting. I expect that they'll expend even more of their credibility this quarter than last, by stretching what exactly constitute "earnings." But on the other hand, they just might have to warn this time, if they have insufficient investment income to hide their declining operating earnings. I think that the reason Gates was mum about earnings when he spoke today was because he knows better than to spook Wall Street on the last day of the quarter.

The thing to look for this quarter from MSFT will be QUALITY of earnings. That's where they've been sinking steadily for the last few quarters.

Dave

"I rather doubt they'll warn"

They don't have to warn and could go down. Rumors of IBM warning are going around.
<earnings from non-operations items> Like what? MSN & Xbox? They don't turn a profit. The stock price driver upper will be Office and the new O\S. If they don't go over big, forget it. They are the money cows. Frog
