John, second half 2001 for Windows XP release. Big window, but they say before Windows Whistler Server. A little Itanium plug at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions Back to Top

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What are the major benefits of Whistler Server?
A: The Whistler Server family will build on the value of the Windows 2000 Server family of operating systems. It will be faster and more reliable, easier to deploy in key scenarios, and provide more powerful management technologies.

Q: Should I wait for Whistler or deploy Windows 2000 Server today?
A: Because Whistler will be an evolutionary step up from Windows 2000, you should continue to deploy Windows 2000 Server operating systems today and not wait for Whistler. Whistler will be completely interoperable with Windows 2000 Server–based IT environments. Thus, you can invest in Windows 2000 Server, Advanced Server, or Datacenter Server now, and add Whistler to your computing infrastructure later after it’s released.

Q: Will the Whistler Server family also be called Windows XP?
A: At this time, the Windows XP branding only applies to the client release. The branding for the Whistler Server family has not yet been finalized.

Q: When will Whistler Server operating systems ship?
A: Microsoft plans on shipping the Windows XP client first, followed later by the Whistler Server family. Both are scheduled for release during the second half of 2001.

Q: Will Microsoft support Itanium with Whistler?
A: Whistler is being optimized to run on both x86 and Itanium processor architectures. Whistler will also be available in a 64-bit version designed to take advantage of the performance advancements of Itanium, such as large addressable memory support and machine check architecture (MCA).
