>I've read actual PC sales are not down.

funny, that's exactly the opposite of what i've been hearing. turns out everyone who wants a PC already has one. and in a recession, buying that second or third PC isn't very likely.

this is the main reason MSFT is trying to move to a yearly subscription model for all their new software, to keep a revenue stream going that otherwise is disappearing.

My guess here - PC sales will be sluggish for 3 years, even if this year is not as bad as some expect.

I do not think that OS and Application requirements are doing to push the current typical 'corporate' (or home for that matter) PC beyond its limits.

In my other life I'm a technology consultant and for demonstrations I have a state of the art laptop running all sorts of demanding server processes. My last laptop held out pretty well for 3 years. The current one will most certainly hold out that long, longer even, partly because applications are trending towards more lightweight processes.

Secondly, the desktops themselves will not be asked to process more over time - in fact less given application trends.

I think the Win 2000 upgrade many are doing may well be the last for 5 years for many orgs.

I have no dog in this softie battle, well yeah I probably do due to supply chain ancillaries -g-, but I believe consumer sales are down and biz are down or a push. This is unit, i'm talking about. ASP is in the crapper.
