Do you see someone like SONS making any headway into replacing the voice switches with IP based
solution? It seems like this will be primarily a niche market on the telco end. If I understand your previous
writing correctly, the telcos does not have to have IP based voice switches in order for AVVID to work.


I'm afraid I am not familiar with SONS. Could you elaborate?

To your second point, you are absolutely correct. In a pure IP Telephony environment, traditional voice switches are not used. The IP phone converts your voice directly to IP data within the handset. The phone attaches to an Ethernet port the same way your PC would attach to a data port. Your voice, which is now just another data packet, transits the data network in a similiar manner as your computer traffic.

In those instances where you want to place a call from an IP phone into the traditional PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) gateways are utilized to convert the data back to voice. Your voice is then passed out to the PSTN in the traditional manner.

At the risk of adding to the confusion, there is a distinction between Voice over IP, and IP Telephony. In the first instance, you still utilize traditional analog handsets and voice switches. However, instead of using channelized trunks of discrete voice channels to interconnect the voice switches, the traffic is converted to IP data before leaving the trunk side of the switch. It then passes through an IP data network to the other switch The switch converts the data back to analog voice, and passes the voice off to a traditional analog voice phone. This is usually referred to as toll bypass.

In a pure IP Telephony environment, the phones are data devices which convert voice directly to IP data. The voice switches are eliminated altogether.
