In a pure IP Telephony environment, the phones are data devices which convert voice directly to IP data. The voice switches are eliminated altogether.

Thanks for clarifying that for us. I have heard a lot about VoIP, but it does not seem to have a big market as of now. If this IP Telephony is catching on, then someone can buy a Cisco router and become his own telephone company. It seems like this is a more elegant solution than VoIP. Do you see sizable companies simply adding capacity to their current internet infrastructure and cut down on their telephone cost? The business lines are still expensive, and the maintenance cost is still high.

Seems like this is a BIG market for those in the customer premise equipment business. That is the old telephone company term that will have lost all its meaning in this case.

Maybe one day we will dial people by their IP address instead of the regular numbers.
