"This reported rate has been low for years. Yet stock prices have been up, down, and all around during this time." The savings rate is a policy issue not a statistical issue. Our collective balance sheets are out of whack. It is a policy issue to want to clean them up. The logic to want to clean them up has been building for years. We put too much faith in "stocks". Last year people were clamoring to have their social security funds in stocks for crying out loud. AG said "it would wreck our economy in the long run". Our economy is not wrecked, but their are people out there who want to see it on a much sounder footing -- job #1, increase the savings rate. Implication, very slow progress in the upward movement of stocks for the next few years.
