Delegates From 15 Countries To Attend Conference In Cape Town on New Industrial Uses For Gold

Date: Tuesday, March 27, 2001

Eighty delegates from 15 countries will be attending the first-ever international conference to focus on new industrial uses for gold. To be held in Cape Town next week, the Catalytic Gold Conference will be officially opened by the Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, Dr Ben Ngubane, on Tuesday, 3 April at 08:30.
The conference has been organised by the World Gold Council, AngloGold, the Catalysis Society of South Africa and Mintek to bring together the world’s leading researchers in what is a comparatively recent field of study. This point will be underscored in the keynote address, entitled “Gold – a relatively new catalyst”, which will be delivered by Professor Geoffrey Bond, a retired fellow from Brunel University in the United Kingdom.

Dr Mike Cortie, whose research division at Mintek is involved in a 50:50 joint venture with AngloGold (Project AuTEK) to pursue the research and development of industrial applications for gold, comments on the significance of the gathering. “Gold has been found to have unique catalytic properties and there are a number of exciting possibilities for their utilisation in air purification, and in the automotive and chemical industries. Their commercial application, however, has still to be proven and tested.

“Although there are major research initiatives going on all over the world this will be the first time that we will be coming together to pool our knowledge and compare our findings. We hope that this conference will have the effect of accelerating research developments in this field and hastening the introduction of gold catalysts to industrial processes.

“For instance, the use of gold in catalysts designed to remove pollutants such as carbon monoxide from air is being thoroughly investigated. Such catalysts could find application in office buildings and in the purification of air for the occupants of passenger aircraft – these are just two possibilities.”

Delegates are coming to the conference from Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Switzerland, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United Sates.
