David, Thanks for that excellent analysis.
With these puts outstanding, paying cash dividends to shareholders prior to expiration of the last puts is out of the question (since the price drops after dividend). That is only assuming they would give up the put warrant issues.

The question just becomes what to do with the cash if it can' be paid out. Invest some in buying companies and use a big chunk of it to buyback as many shares as they can.
With depressed markets, I would imagine MSFT may be more aggressive in repurchase of shares.

The have too much idle cash.

March 2001 to March 2003 expirations also signal that MSFT has not let up in these transactions and may be in the process of issuing the next batch of put warrants. I use to make note of issue dates (time of year) but don't remember now. It is possible that the 78 strike prices are the ones expiring soon and not the 70s due to MSFT's price action in the last year. The 70s are probably expiring in 2003.

BTW--I read an old article and time to the Appeals Court decision was indicated to be 2 to 3 months by some people after the oral arguments of Feb 28/2001. I believe a favorable decision to MSFT will take less time to issue than an adverse one. A pro-government ruling would have too many issues to work through meaning it could take many months. Just a hunch.

All those shares bought back, yet the shares outstanding seem to have risen:

Does that tell you something?

JMHO.
