>> Why would Matsushita sign a multi-million dollar license deal for IDCC's CDMA IPR, If they were going to pay and use QCOM IPR for WCDMA..

Great question. Let's turn it around.

Why would Matsushita sign a multi-million dollar license deal for QCOM's CDMA IPR, If they were going to pay and use IDCC's IPR for WCDMA.?

Use the following link and check under Subscriber Equipment, and you'll see that Matsushita is already a QCOM licensee.

qualcomm.com

Is it possible that the story about IDCC is just a rumor?

There are a lot of companies that claim to have some IPR that is "essential" to WCDMA. That was the whole point of adding "bells and whistles" to Qualcomm's form of CDMA, so that other companies would have something. Apparently (or maybe, I don't really trust anything IDC says), IDC has convinced some people that they have something they need to have to do WCDMA. Why does that mean IDC has everything those companies need to do WCDMA? That would indeed be a great revelation -- all of a sudden, out of the blue, IDC has everything you need to do WCDMA. By the way, the press release also says they've licensed Matsushita to use IDC's patents for CDMA-2000. Do you believe IDC has all the essential IPR for CDMA-2000?

pcstel,

Congratulations for your IDC picking up some patent support for W-CDMA. As one of over twenty claimants of W-CDMA IPR you have every right to be thrilled when a large company accepts your claims.

However, this is a thread about Qualcomm. Qualcomm, the basis for this conversation, has never made any claim to being the sole contributor to W-CDMA IPR. In fact, the many small insects like IDC swarming around the W-CDMA dung heap will go a long way to making W-CDMA prohibitively expensive. So many more claims to pay by any eventual W-CDMA user will only add to the advantages enjoyed by CDMA 2000 customers.

Qualcomm has stated many times they will be paid the same royalty rate for CDMA 2000 or W-CDMA. It does not matter to Qualcomm how many other companies also get paid for W-CDMA.

Again, congratulations, on news which will have absolutely no effect upon Qualcomm.

May I suggest going over to the Matsushita thread and boasting about how their W-CDMA equipment is now going to be even more expensive?
