I did not mean to imply they were perpetrators of a hoax- but it doesn't make them right, to be a martyr. All religions have martyrs- and most religions claim to be exclusive, so they can't all be right- according to the framework of the religions as interpreted by the religious- I don't say they can't all be right, just wanted to clarify that.

What I meant was we've all seen bribery- so if the guards were bribed that's an experience we can all "believe" in, because it's real world.

We've all seen and read about martyrs- suicide bombers, Buddhist monks setting themselves on fire, folks killing themselves to follow comets, etc- so there's another thing we've got real data on.

Actually, plenty of people do perpetrate hoaxes (although they aren't usually in the martyr set) so there's another class of people I left out.

My point was, why take the pink space bunny explanation when there are plenty of other explanations that make sense? Why choose the one that disagrees with everything we (or at least I) know about reality? I can't answer that question- btw. I've no idea why people choose to believe that particular explanation of events, or any of the other supernatural explanations floating around this planet. I couldn't believe even as a child. I've no problem with other people believing it as long as they don't do anything awful to me because I don't believe it. Because that just seems wrong to me- not that I can prove it is wrong. But it's one of those "feelings" that Neo is always talking about. And it's why I know Neo and Greg seem to be wrong. Most of what I "know" in my gut, is really different from what they "know" in their gut- and I'm not alone. What I "know" many other people know. It's not like everyone looks at the universe and sees objective morality sitting out there, benevolence, and God (many many people don't see this- so it's obviously not a universal truth or everyone would see it) The truths I get from observation, are very different from the truths they get. We see what we want to see. We know what we want to know. It's a relative world, and that's just the way it seems to me.

<I imagine most people who choose martyrdom are true believers rather then perpitrators of a hoax.>

How does Heaven's Gate fit into this characterization? I wonder if it crossed anyone's mind why they'd need a role of quarters if they were leaving their bodies behind?
