Interesting proposal from M.I.T. to open up their college courses via the internet, thus ending the privatization of knowledge , allow any outsider to virtually look over the shoulder of a student attending calsses there.

this is a great step , imo.

Universities are repositories for the bulk of
human knowledge . Very interesting to allow
free access to all that is
deposited there.

A human web of knowledge.

How does Heaven's Gate fit into this characterization? I wonder if it crossed anyone's mind why they'd need a role of quarters if they were leaving their bodies behind?

I'm not sure. I know the general story about the Heaven's Gate group, but not any great level of detail. If they commited suicide for their beliefs I would think they actually believed in them. If not I did say "most people who choose martyrdom" not "all". I'm not sure what exactly the "roll of quarters" refers to. If the bodies all had rolls of quarters perhaps there was some signifcance of this within the cult. Or perhaps some of them were not sure they would actually go through with the suicide until the last minute. Or perhaps they just liked carrying quarters and felt no reason to get rid of them before the suicide.
