One of the blunders was that we intercepted the following message (we had broken the Japanese codes) to Consul General Kita in Honolulu, that read the following:

"In view of the present situation, the presence in port of warships, airplane carriers, and cruisers is of utmost importance, hereafter, to the utmost of your ability, let me know day by day. Wire me in each case whether or not there are any barrage balloons above Pearl Harbor or if there are any indications that they will be sent up. Also advice me whether or not the warships are provided with antitorpedo nets."

but since it concerned Hawaii, and had nothing to do with diplomacy, it was given low priority and not decoded...

Interesting proposition: what if we had sufficient warning? Would that have been good long term, or not so good? Obviously, for the men who died then, it would have been better, but what about globally?
