Loose credit still abounds. Smaller non-essential purchases (as opposed to new cars or new house/second house) are the prefect panacea for the American consumer who is addicted to spending. BWDIK.

Hi Rick, I'll take a stab at this too.

I think BBY is eating other retailer's lunch in their sector. Lechmere and Nobody Beats the Whiz has either closed down in the NE or reduced stores. Circuit City is going thru a major overhaul. They used to own the market with the new concept but got cute and tried to sell appliances and vacumm cleaners with stereo salespeople.

I've rarely been impressed with CC's customer service either. BBY is a little better. BBY has just been more aggressive in opening new stores and creating the buying environment (which if you notice, CC is beginning to copy).

Consumer wise, digital equip is hot and is cheaper than a new car or other fancy toy and it's a new flavor which hasn't peaked (but is close). I think the consumer is still extending it's credit card at this point, but not for long. I was impressed that margins increased, which is a good reflection of BBY management, considering there is probably a lot of inventory to move. Lets see how RS and CC do in this area. I know it's not from the $18 cd's (crapola!). MP3 rules here, but those smart cards make up for a lot of lost sales.
